The city's annual carnival is regarded as Europe's best and is ranked in world terms second only to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It has been estimated in recent years that as many as 280,000 people from all over the world have been on the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife at the height of the celebrations. The Plaza de España is the focal point for the revellers dancing to an array of bands performing simultaneously on stages dotted around or to a cacophony of rock music reverberating from the many kiosks lining the streets. One of the prime attractions of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife is its lively nightlife. Keep in mind that the night starts late in Santa Cruz, but when it does, it doesn't stop! Things are pretty quiet until about 10pm but after midnight the streets fill up with people headed to the discos and pubs. Avenida Anaga on the waterfront is the area to head for. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a vibrant city with pace of life that varies considerably from the rest of the island. It has spread itself around the bay and has a backdrop of the Anarga Mountains. It has an eclectic mix of architecture with some stunning buildings both ancient and modern. The baroque Church of the Conception stands in sharp contrast to the Santiago Calatrava Concert Hall which is a remarkable concrete structure, on the waterfront between the marine park and the port. It seats eighteen hundred in its auditorium & is home to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra who give concerts throughout the year. There are marinas for those who arrive by boat but booking is essential in the busiest periods. The beaches of Las Gaviotas and Las Teresitas are both close to Santa Cruz De Tenerife. This is a lively base from which to explore the north of Tenerife.
