Garachico Weather & Travel info | Tenerife, Spain

Garachico is a very picturesque village resort on the Northern coast of Tenerife, Canary islands, Spain, to the west of Puerto de la Cruz. At one time Garachico was the main port for the island, important for exporting wine until the harbour was  partially blocked by lava in a volcanic flow in 1706. That’s the date this town changed forever. The streets and harbour filled with lava when nearby Volcan Negro erupted - and the busiest port in Tenerife lost its livelihood. Garachico was rebuilt on the lava ...

Garachico promises peaceful relaxation in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The verdant lowlands with a dramatic backdrop of Mount Teide frame this very picturesque town. Stroll through the streets of Garachico and admire its many old buildings that either survived the earthquake or have been lovingly restored. Bathe in the rock pools or discover the marine life when snorkelling or scuba diving in the coves. Garachico is popular with couples of all ages who come to relax in this charming town and enjoy the many leisure facilities that it has to offer. Summer temperatures can reach 35 degrees.

Garachico

If you need a healthy dose of fun in the sun while you're in town, you can find unique beaches both in and around Garachico. The Garachico region's coastline consists of six kilometers of quiet black sand coves surrounded by spectacular volcanic rock formations; El Muelle, La Caleta de Interian, Las Aguas and San Roque are just a few of the area's best. One of Garachico's most unique features, however, is known as "El Caletón." Located right next to the San Miguel Castle, it consists of a series of natural pools that have formed within the incredible rock formations left behind by volcanic eruptions long ago

Some things did escape the lava’s flow. Like Castillo de San Miguel, a 16th century fortress - it stood firm against the disaster, guarding its wonderful view. Visit the small museum. Browse the craft stall. And climb down the steps to the inviting rock pools formed by the lava. In the main square, an old Franciscan monastery called the Convento de San Francisco also survived.
And its pretty courtyards now house exhibitions and a dinky natural history museum with maps showing lava flow route. If maps aren’t your thing and you’d rather see it for yourself, take the mountain road up to Mirador de Garachico to look over the town There are some good restaurants along Garachico's sea front. Most offer fish and meat dishes and some specialise in sea food.  Also check out the bars and bistros that are both on the sea front and in the town around the plaza. The band stand in the plaza is also a pleasant spot to have a drink and snack where you can sit in the sunshine or in the shade of the trees.
